Beck’s, the nation’s largest family-owned, retail seed company, announced plans to expand its headquarters and production operations in Hamilton County, creating up to 56 new jobs by 2022.

“Agriculture has long been foundational to Indiana’s economy, and today the industry continues to grow and propel new innovations forward, thanks to the dedication of companies like Beck’s,” said Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch, Indiana Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. “Our agriculture and agbiosciences companies not only contribute billions of dollars to the Hoosier economy, they are responsible for developing the products that farmers need to fuel and feed the world. We are thankful for Beck’s contributions to agriculture and its commitment to Indiana, which will create more quality careers and opportunities for Hoosier families.”

The Indiana-based company will invest more than $62 million in its Atlanta, Indiana, operations, enabling Beck’s to double its processing capacity of high-yielding corn and soybeans for farmers across the Midwest. The expansion will include a new seven-story, stand-alone processing tower, five new warehouses for seed and equipment storage, as well as office space for additional employees. With this growth, Beck’s will increase its processing capacity from three million to six million units per year over the next six years. Construction will begin immediately and is expected to be complete by 2022.

Beck’s, which employs more than 661 people across its 16 facilities, including 375 full-time employees in Indiana, is hiring for positions in production, processing, research and data and development. Interested applicants may apply online.

“Indiana is an easy state to do business in,” said Sonny Beck, CEO of Beck’s. “And because of that, we decided to build here in our home state. The foresight of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) and Hamilton County officials to upgrade the roadways near our plant will allow us to double the soybean capacity at our headquarters, improve safety and decrease traffic congestion. Not only will this increase capacity and add jobs here in Indiana, it will allow us to better serve the needs of all our customers throughout our 11-state marketing area.”

Founded in 1937, Beck’s began when Lawrence Beck and his son, Francis, planted hybrid parent seed corn developed by the Purdue University botany department. Since 1992, Beck’s has achieved tremendous growth, doubling in size every 6.5 years. Today, Beck’s has not only become the No. 1 selling corn and soybean seed brand in Indiana, but the third largest corn and soybean brand in the United States. The family-owned and operated business has additional Indiana facilities in Sharpsville, Waveland and Noblesville as well as operations in Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ohio.

“Hamilton County is thrilled to support the expansion of Beck’s headquarters,” said Brad Beaver, president of the Hamilton County Council. “We have worked with Beck’s many times in the past and hope to again in the future. Beck’s is an important part of our community, and we are grateful for their dedication to Hamilton County and excited to be a part of their continued growth.”

The IEDC offered Beck’s up to $560,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation and investment plans. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning the company is not eligible to claim incentives until qualified investment has been made. Hamilton County has approved additional property tax abatements.

Manufacturing. Logistics. Agriculture.

These are the stalwarts of the Hoosier economy. And certainly, they aren’t going anywhere. In fact, they’re evolving right along with the economy itself, developing new technologies and even creating new industries, like agbiosciences – the intersection of agriculture, life sciences and information technology. It’s quickly becoming one of the state’s most promising and fastest-growing business sectors.

A COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION

Across the state, Hoosiers are forging ahead, focused on tackling critical world challenges in food security and animal health. In Greenfield, Elanco’s digital transformation is accelerating as the company probes its troves of big data for connections among disease, productivity and animal-health optimization. “We keep coming with a portfolio of innovations,” says CEO Jeff Simmons.

The company is harnessing artificial intelligence to develop new antibiotics for pigs; acquiring IP for probiotic feed for chickens; and leveraging the Internet of Things (loT) for tighter connections to customers ranging from Brazilian cattle farmers to American veterinarians.

Similarly, Corteva Agriscience, a champion of responsible agriculture, is tapping into innovation to help feed a planet of nine billion people and growing. The company, which selected Indianapolis to be one of its leading global R&D hubs following the merger of DuPont and The Dow Chemical Company, is utilizing digital technologies and seed product development tools like gene editing to offer farmers integrated solutions for their most pressing challenges.

Ag innovation leaders are at home in Indiana – the heart of the Heartland – thanks to the state’s rich tradition of agriculture and the talent pipeline being developed here at institutions like Purdue University, Huntington University and Ivy Tech. “We get a front seat in innovation because of all the patents, knowledge and awareness here around the importance of agriculture,” notes Simmons. That’s helped make Indiana a “magnet for talent,” according to Scott Hutchins, former global director of R&D at Corteva Agriscience.

LEADING THE CONVERSATION

Traditionally known for being humble, “Indiana is done being modest,” says Gov. Holcomb. And the industry agrees. The state’s network of public and private stakeholders is uniquely committed to catapulting Indiana’s leadership position in agbioscience excellence and innovation. In 2018, the IEDC and AgriNovus Indiana partnered to co-host the first-ever Forbes AgTech Midwest Summit. The industry; according to Steve Forbes, chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media, “promises to overcome the daunting challenge of feeding the growing population and doing so in a sustainable way. It seemed fitting to come to the center of it all.”

Indiana is indeed at the center of it all, says AgriNovus President and CEO Beth Bechdol. “thanks to the state’s assets in converging spaces like robotics, sensors and ioT.”

“That’s a message we’re delivering to the world,” added IEDC President Elaine Bedel, citing recent industry events in Indiana like the annual FFA National Convention and Agbioscience Innovation Summit as well as ag-focused international delegations led by Gov. Holcomb and Lt. Governor Crouch to Israel and Canada, respectively- all aimed at telling Indiana’s story to industry leaders and startups alike, connecting with outside markets, and bringing investment and jobs to Indiana.

Hutchins credits the state and partners like AgriNovus and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) for making the agbioscience sector a top priority and “creating an environment for investment in ag + bio + science.”

In May, Gov. Holcomb led an agbiosciences-focused delegation to Israel joined by Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Bruce Kettler, AgriNovus Indiana President and CEO Beth Bechdol and representatives of the state’s agbioscience sector. During the trip, the delegation established new partnerships with ag and tech leaders and attended the Agritech Israel Conference in Tel Aviv, where the governor highlighted Indiana’s rich history of agriculture, new innovations and opportunities for growth within the industry.

In September, Indiana hosted Forbes’ first-ever Forbes AgTech summit in the Midwest. Top 3 Initiatives Focused on Supporting Target Industries

With the New Year upon us, the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership’s business development team continues to assess and evaluate 2018’s work while charging forward toward 2019 goals.

In 2018, three new companies, Rural Sourcing, EnviroKure, and Samson Exhaust, committed over $14 million in capital investments and 193 new jobs to our region.

The business development team also published 17 additional projects. These projects are years in the making, and each of these projects may have its own unique “germination” cycle, so to speak. For example, the EnviroKure project was over four years in the making after it was published.

With 2018 behind us and achievements calculated, 2019 is posing to be another year of sustained action to increase business development in the region.

Here are the initiatives we’re focused on in 2019.

  1. Focusing business development efforts on our established target industries
  2. Selling Electric Works nationally as a regional asset
  3. Developing the agricultural industry

The Regional Partnership’s established target industries such as VehiclesMedical Device & Technology, and Specialty Insurance are again a focal point for the team and our business development efforts.

With the support of local economic developers in the 11 counties, the region is actively working to promote Electric Works through targeted outreach to nationally recognized site selectors, commercial real estate brokers and other contributors. The Electric Works project is an example of the spirit of collaboration and illustrates the sentiment, “what’s good for one county is good for the region.”

We know that collaboration is key to the business development team’s success in 2019.

As Senior Principal at Ginovus Leslie Wagner wrote in a July 17, 2018 article published in Inside Indiana Business, “Our experience indicates that businesses are much more willing to invest for the long term and grow in a community that demonstrates it can work collaboratively, is financially stable, and has strong community leadership.”

This year, we’re also taking an in-depth look at Northeast Indiana’s agriculture industry. With proven success in the food and beverage industry, the business development team is collaborating with community leaders to capitalize on the region’s rich agricultural history and assets.

Northeast Indiana’s momentum is recognized nationally and internationally because of the collaboration of our partners and region. Business leaders, educational partners and government officials are working together to meet the needs of prospective companies. This unique collaboration gives Northeast Indiana a competitive edge in the competition for jobs and investment.

In 2019, we’re determined, focused and ready to make Northeast Indiana a magnet for the best businesses and talent by working together.
